This page describes a route, not a person. It covers France only: it reports what a public service publishes about who carries out an assessment for adults, and it also says what that service does not publish, namely any price or any waiting time in figures. It will mostly help if you live in France, or are thinking of having an assessment there.

1What is the first step of an adult autism assessment?

An appointment with a doctor or a health professional trained in autism. The Maison de l'autisme names the family doctor (médecin traitant), the occupational physician, or a psychiatrist, psychologist or speech therapist. It adds that, whatever your situation, seeing a doctor remains an essential step.

This first professional does not reach a conclusion. After an initial examination, they may notice a neurodevelopmental difficulty and raise a suspicion. To follow it up, they either see you again or refer you to other professionals, who carry out more detailed assessments.

2Hospital, CMP, autism resource centre or private practice: what does the choice change?

The Maison de l'autisme's pathway guide offers four types of structure for an adult assessment. The table reports what the source says about each, and what it leaves out.

The four types of structure named for adults, according to the Maison de l'autisme (read on 23 October 2026).
StructureWhat the source saysWhat it does not say
HospitalWaits and the time needed to complete the route can be very longNo waiting time in figures, no price
Community mental health centre (CMP)Named among the bodies a professional may refer you toNo waiting time, no procedure, no cost
Autism resource centre (CRA)Present in every region. Mostly involved when a situation is complex or a specialist opinion is needed. An adult can consult the one near their homeNo waiting time in figures, no price
Private practiceAverage wait described as "drastically reduced". Consultation fees are paid by youNo price

The Maison de l'autisme presents private practice as a pragmatic answer to hospital waits. It also states that a resource centre complements local services without replacing them, and that it is mainly called on when a situation is complex.

3Do you need to see a psychiatrist before a specialist centre?

Often, yes. The Maison de l'autisme writes that most centres ask for a psychiatric opinion before carrying out an assessment. The reason given is that many signs linked to autism also appear in other, more common difficulties, so those other explanations are explored first, before a specialist assessment.

"Most" does not mean "all". The source does not say which centres require it. The safest move is to ask the centre you have in mind before you build a file, so that this step does not come as a surprise after months of waiting.

4Who pays for an adult autism assessment in France?

In private practice, you pay for the consultations yourself and are reimbursed afterwards. The Maison de l'autisme writes that a complementary health insurer (mutuelle), if you have one, reimburses "in full or in part depending on the fees charged". What you end up paying therefore depends on your policy and on the professional's fees.

For hospitals, community mental health centres and autism resource centres, the pages we read say nothing about cost. We infer nothing from that. None of the three pages publishes a price, so we quote none, rather than repeat a figure that circulates without a source.

  • Before starting, ask the professional how many sessions are planned and what the total cost will be.
  • Ask your insurer what it reimburses for this kind of assessment, and on which documents.

5Can the assessment be done remotely, and what happens at the end?

Not entirely. The Maison de l'autisme considers that observing someone in person remains necessary to judge communication strategies, and that tests must be carried out face to face. A video consultation can help, for example, to gather information from family and friends.

At the end, the coordinating doctor (médecin référent) goes through the conclusions and writes a final report and a medical certificate. That certificate allows, where relevant, an application for rights to the MDPH. The report describes a situation at one point in time, and the source recommends updating it regularly.

What this guide does not say

This page describes the French route as a public service presents it, read on 23 October 2026. It publishes no price, no waiting time in figures and no list of centres by département: the sources do not give them, and the Maison de l'autisme points to its own directory. It does not cover children, whose route is different. It can neither confirm nor rule out a condition and does not replace medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

Who carries out an adult autism assessment in France?
A route that starts with a doctor and continues with professionals trained in autism: a hospital, a community mental health centre, an autism resource centre or private practitioners, according to the Maison de l'autisme. Resource centres mostly handle complex situations. An adult can also consult the one near their home.
Do you need a psychiatrist to reach an autism resource centre?
The Maison de l'autisme says most centres ask for a psychiatric opinion before assessing, because many signs also appear in other, more common difficulties. The source does not list which centres do. Ask the one in your region what it requires before you build your file.
Is a private autism assessment reimbursed in France?
According to the Maison de l'autisme, you pay for consultations first, then a complementary insurer (mutuelle), if you have one, reimburses all or part depending on the fees. The pages we read give no prices and do not say what national health insurance covers: ask your insurance fund and your insurer.
Can an autism assessment be done by video consultation?
Not on its own. The Maison de l'autisme explains that direct observation and tests require physical presence. A video consultation remains useful for gathering information from family and friends, but it cannot carry a full assessment route by itself, because tests have to be done face to face.
Is an online questionnaire enough to build an MDPH file?
No. The Maison de l'autisme writes that grids found on the internet cannot be used to build a file with the MDPH. The file relies on the final report and the medical certificate written by the coordinating doctor at the end of the assessment route.
