How much does an ADHD assessment cost in England?

There is no single price, because there is no single route. The gap between routes is what matters: nothing at all through the NHS, against a sum set freely by each private provider. What follows separates what is published from what is not.

Four factors explain most of the spread, and three of them can be checked before booking anything.

• The route itself. An NHS assessment carries no fee at any point; a private one is priced by the provider.
• What the quoted price includes: the assessment alone, or the report, the follow-up appointments and any correspondence with your GP.
• The number of appointments. An assessment does not fit into one sitting, and it is the number of sessions rather than the hourly rate that makes the bill.
• What happens afterwards. If treatment follows, the cost depends on whether a local shared-care arrangement exists, which differs between areas and is not centrally published.

The independent ADHD Taskforce, in its April 2025 report, described the direct consequence of that spread: inability to access NHS services has driven growth in private provision and produced two-tier access, one route for those who can pay and another for those who cannot. That is a description of the system, not a recommendation to use either route.

The NHS route is free at the point of use, and the patient choice guidance published by NHS England on 19 December 2023 adds a practical lever to it. For an elective referral to a first outpatient appointment, patients may choose any suitable provider holding a qualifying NHS contract, and the guidance notes that remotely delivered services such as ADHD assessments may fall within that right.

• Covered: the assessment itself, when it takes place within NHS-commissioned services.
• Covered: the choice of an alternative qualifying provider after a GP referral, under the guidance of 19 December 2023.
• Not covered: any assessment you arrange privately, whatever the provider says about NHS recognition afterwards.
• Not verified: what happens to prescribing and monitoring after a private assessment, which depends on local shared-care arrangements rather than on a national rule.

One consequence deserves to be stated plainly: paying privately buys time, not entitlement. The route taken does not change what an assessment is or what it can establish, and it does not guarantee that later NHS care will follow automatically.

On cost, the answer is unambiguous: nothing is paid at the point of use. On waiting, the published picture is blunter than any range would be. In its plain English summary of the ADHD Taskforce report, published on 9 December 2025, NHS England states that some people wait more than two years for an assessment, and that in some areas waiting times have grown to ten to fifteen years.

The same summary gives the scale of the demand behind those numbers: around 5% of children and 2 to 3% of adults have ADHD, only 25% of children and 15% of adults with ADHD receive medication, and the condition is estimated to cost the United Kingdom about £17 billion a year when unsupported. The Taskforce's April 2025 report puts population prevalence at 3 to 5%.

• Ask your GP practice which service you would be referred to, and what waiting time it currently quotes.
• Ask whether the legal right to choose applies to your referral, and which qualifying providers are available.
• Ask to be placed on a cancellation list where one exists.
• Do not wait for the assessment appointment to raise what is difficult now: sleep, anxiety and workload can be addressed straight away.

There is nothing to spread on the NHS route, which is the first thing worth saying. For a private assessment, payment terms are a commercial matter between you and the provider: no public body regulates or publishes them, so any instalment scheme you are offered is not verified here.

1. Ask for a written quote before the first appointment, listing every session included and every one that is not.
2. Ask what the report contains and whether a letter to your GP is included in the price.
3. Ask what happens if the assessment does not conclude in the way you expected, and whether anything further is chargeable.
4. Check whether any workplace or insurance scheme you already hold covers assessment, before paying yourself.

A written quote is worth more than any payment plan. It turns an open-ended cost into a known one, and it makes visible the part that most often surprises people: what is charged after the assessment rather than for it.
